Preamble (પ્રસ્તાવના)

My blog, today, varies with the publication of a poem. Till now, all my articles were in prose. In my first introductory page ‘About me’, I had mentioned that I have written some Poems and Haikus also in Gujarati.

Today’s poem is not basically written by me, but it is simply a summarized translation in the free style form of a poem. It is probably a Syrian work which may be in Arabic or it may have originally been written in English as I could not find the source then, but simply the text of it in English anyway. Some change in content at the end has been made to make it a universal one. My articles are not limited to particular group of people and therefore I have taken somewhat liberty in this regard.

Now, to my great delight, I could find the source of the poem in question through surfing on internet and could contact the proper authority. Accordingly, I am thankful to Janab Mustafa Jaffer of Ahlul Bayt Digital Library Project for his role as a middle man between the Author Late Janab Mulla Ashgarali M.M.Jaffer’s son Janab Abbas Jaffer and myself to seek out the consent for the summarized translation of the poem in Gujarati with some change in the content for the purpose mentioned above.

Torture, injustice, harassment, oppression and punishments from the dictatorial or jungle rule to innocent people are universal issues. They are related to entire human kind. How and why should they be separated in the categories of creed, cast, religion or faith? Oppression is the oppression whether it may concern to any individual or a mass; and it should always be condemned.

Now, go to my translated Gujarati poem  to share the feelings of despair and hope of the original author and the translator.

– કે જુલ્મો તેઉના દયામાં ખપે !

કદીય જોયા હશે ઇતિહાસે

જુલ્મગારો એવા, જેવા કે તેઓ ?

તેઉનો શાસનયુગ જંગલના કાયદાની ધરી ઉપર ઘુમરાતો, અને

’મારે તેની તલવાર’ દેશભક્તિ ગીત !

શહેરો અને ગામો ભરી દીધાં,

દુરાચાર અને પાપોથી ખીચોખીચ ;

ખાલી ન જગ્યા કોઈ,

સઘળી દુર્ગુણોથી ભરપૂર !

દેશદાઝ હણાઈ,

હૃદયની શુદ્ધતાઓ, વળી મરદોના મરતબા,

ખરડાયા વિષ્ટાભરી નિષ્ઠા થકી !

આબાલવૃદ્ધ –

પચપચી ગયાં, પરૂનિગળતાં ગૂમડાં જાણે !

સ્ત્રીઓ બની રહી

તોફાની વાંદરીઓ વંઠેલ !

માનવજાતની તવારીખમાં,

જોટો નહિ જડે, એવા જુલ્મો અને સતામણીઓનો,

જેવા કે – જેવી કે :

જોયો છે કદીય તમે,

એવો ચાબુક કે જેનો આહાર અને પીણું છે –

નિર્દોષ માંસપેશીઓ અને પાક રૂધિર ?

કદીય એવા માણસ વિષે સાંભળ્યું છે,

જેની ચામડી જીવતાંજીવત

ઊતરડાય,

અને ભોંકાતા હોય ખીલા અણીદાર

કાનનાં છિદ્રો મહીં ?

કદીય સાંભળ્યું છે એવા માણસ વિષે કે ,

જેનાં હાડકાંનો ચૂરો કરવામાં આવતો હોય,

કે પછી દાંતોની ઝીણીઝીણી કણકીઓ ?

સાંભળ્યું છે કદીય એવું કે,

માણસનું માંસ ભઠ્ઠીમાં શેકવામાં આવતું હોય?

કે પછી વરાળમાં બફાતું હોય યા અગનઝાળમાં ભૂંજતું ?

કદીક-કદીય સાંભળ્યું છે કે,

પેશાબની કુદરતી હાજત કાજે,

કાકલૂદીઓ અફળાય બહેરા કાને,

અને થાય બળજબરી અટકાવ કાજે ?

સાંભળ્યું છે કદીક કે, શરીરનાં છિદ્રેછિદ્રોને

દટ્ટા મારી બંધ કરી દેવામાં આવે ?

હા, આ બધા જુલ્મો – આવા બધા જુલ્મો,

સહી રહી છે, વહી રહી છે, નિર્દોષ ને ભોળી પ્રજા !

અપેક્ષા પણ બીજી શી રાખી શકાય તેઓ થકી ?

એ જ હોય, બસ એ જ હોય ; કેમ કે

તેઓ હલકા છે, અધર્મી છે અને હરામી પણ !

છેક નીચલા ખાનદાનમાં જન્મેલા –

અને, છતાંય નિજ ખાનદાનને સારું કહેવડાવે તેવા,

નિમ્નતર નિમ્ન !

કુલ્ટાકૂખે ઉમદા અને બહાદુર કદીય જન્મે કે ?

ના, કદીય નહિ.

પણ હા, જન્મે તો જરૂર જન્મે –

ગંદવાડ આખાય જગનો !

હું માનવ છું,

માનવમર્યાદાઓ વચ્ચે જીવતો હું માનવ છું.

મારી છાતી માનવી હોવાના ગર્વથી ભરપૂર છે,

હું આસ્તિક છું, ઈશ્વરથી ડરું છું – એવા ઈશ્વરથી,

કે જે બિચારો ધ્રૂજે છે તેઉના જુલ્મથી !

દિવ્ય પ્રકાશ મારા અંતરને અજવાળે,

માનવજાતમાં કીર્તિવંત હું ઝળહળું,

હું આવાહન કરતો રહીશ, પડકાર ફેંકતો રહીશ,

શ્રદ્ધાધ્વજ ગ્રહી ઊંચો, ઊંચી ગ્રીવાએ

લોકોને જોડાવા કહેતો રહીશ મુજ સાથે,

ઝઝૂમીશ – ઝઝૂમવાનું સૂચવીશ,

જુલ્મીઓના જુલ્મો સામે, એવા જુલ્મો થકી –

કે જુલ્મો તેઉના દયામાં ખપે !
